Boston University Art History Association is organizing a trip to the MassMoca. The trip includes transportation, a guided tour, and a box lunch. The event is open to all students in the Greater Boston area. 

The bus pickup location is the George Sherman Union Plaza at Boston University. Buses will leave at 9:00am and will return to BU around 7:00pm. Please do arrive early to avoid delays.

Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Xu Bing: Phoenix - Drawing inspiration from the contemporary realities of his fast-changing country, Chinese artist Xu Bing spent two years creating his newest work, Phoenix. The installation features two monumental birds fabricated entirely from materials harvested from construction sites in urban China, including demolition debris, steel beams, tools, and remnants of the daily lives of migrant laborers. At once fierce and strangely beautiful, the mythic Phoenixes bear witness to the complex interconnection between labor, history, commercial development, and the rapid accumulation of wealth in today's China.

Oh, Canada - Canada is the second largest country in the world by area and boasts both a vibrant nationwide arts community and a strong public commitment to culture. And yet Canadian contemporary art has not received widespread attention outside Canada's borders. The largest survey of contemporary Canadian art ever produced outside Canada,Oh Canada features work by more than 60 artists who hail from every province and nearly every territory in the country, spanning multiple generations and working in all media. MASS MoCA's curator Denise Markonish spent the last three years crisscrossing Canada to view hundreds of exhibitions in museums and galleries, visiting over 400 artists' studios, and making connections with a full range of artists working in Canada today.

Invisible Cities - Titled after Italo Calvino's beloved book - which imagines Marco Polo's vivid descriptions of numerous cities of a fading empire to Kublai Khan - the exhibition features the work of ten diverse artists who re-imagine urban landscapes both familiar and fantastical. Like Marco Polo's poetic imagery, which leaves the reader wondering if the cities he describes are real or perhaps all different versions of his own Venetian home, the works in the show explore how our perceptions of place are shaped by personal influences as diverse as memory, desire, and loss, as well as by cultural forces such as history and the media.

ABOUT BU ART HISTORY ASSOCIATION

The Undergraduate History of Art & Architecture Association is an undergraduate student-run organization. We are open to anyone, regardless of major or knowledge of art history & architecture. Throughout the year, we organize some great activities, such as museum visits, a trip to New York City, and guest speakers. We hold career advising sessions to help those interested in an art-related career decide what to do and how to do it.
